The First Annual International HPV Awareness Day

Ottawa, March 2, 2018

– The Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC) is joining forces with about 80 organizations worldwide to commemorate the first annual International HPV Awareness Day, being celebrated this year on March 4th.

International HPV Awareness Day is led by the International Papilloma Virus Society with the 2018 slogan “Give Love, Not HPV,” www.givelovenothpv.org.

“About 75% of Canadians will have at least one HPV infection in their lifetime. We are thrilled to support our global colleagues in a united effort to raise awareness about how we can combat this very common and highly contagious virus, says Dr. Jennifer Blake, CEO, SOGC. “The HPV vaccine and the use of condoms are safe and effective ways to prevent the spread of HPV and HPV-related cancers.”

There are more than 200 different types of HPV, and some types are known to cause certain cancers, such as cervical, anal and oropharyngeal cancer. Worldwide, cervical cancer is the fourth most frequent cancer in women, and an estimated 270,000 women die of cervical cancer every year.
